Grade 5 and 6 Canberra Excursion 2014

Day 1 Wednesday, 8th October 2014
06:30am Depart school
Morning tea and comfort stop on the way - (Students to bring their own morning tea)
11:00am National Capital Exhibition Centre – Why is Canberra situated where it is? Who came up with the name Canberra?
1:30pm Museum of Democracy (Old Parliament House) – Students participate in a mock debate on a key historical issue, taking the roles of various parliamentarians.
4:00 pm Parliament House – guided tour of House of Representatives and Senate
5:00pm Arrive at accommodation – to be announced
5:15pm Dinner at Motel
7:30 pm National Botanic Gardens
We will participate in a fun guided activity that explores the Gardens by torchlight as we experience the sounds, smells and feel of the Gardens in the dark. We might be lucky to see one of our insectivorous bats silhouetted against the blue sky, or a sugar glider or possum out in search of food in the treetops. Our tour guide will open the gates, lock us in for 90 minutes and engage us for a fun and memorable experience. The walk takes an hour and we will be provided with ponchos, sustainable energy dynamo torches and rechargeable spotlights. Our tour will also incorporate hands-on time with Aboriginal artifacts over a hot drink and biscuits at the end of the evening.

Day 2 Thursday, 9th October 2014
7:00am Breakfast at your hotel and be ready to depart at 8.00 am
9:00am Australian Institute of Sport
We will be given a 90 minute guided tour of the AIS. Afterwards we will learn the rules, skills and drills for three different sports. Sports will be taken from a range of sports: cricket, futsal, hockey, netball, sofcrosse, wrestling, track and field, volleyball. Afterwards, we receive a certificate of participation while teachers get a fact sheet outlining the skills learnt, making it easy to incorporate them into our school’s sport curriculum.
12:00pm Lunch break (provided by motel)
1:00pm War Memorial
Here we will be doing our own self-guided tour, focusing on various exhibits that portray important events in Australia’s military history. This will included participating in the G for George (Lancaster bomber) and Japanese midget submarines in Sydney Harbor. After viewing the First and Second World War galleries we will have a short break outside before heading to Korean, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan galleries.
5:45pm Dinner at accommodation
7:30pm Dinosaur Museum at night
We will be given a night tour of the museum looking at the evolution of dinosaurs.

Day 3 Friday, 10th October 2014
7:30am Breakfast at accommodation and bags on the bus
9:00 am Questacon
Here we participate in a self-guided tour, exploring each of the hands-on activity rooms.
11:30pm Lunch (provided by the motel)
12:30pm CSIRO Discovery
Students complete in a number of experiments that relate to the areas that CSIRO are currently investigating.
3:30pm Depart Canberra for school, with comfort stop and dinner along the way. (Students to cover their own costs here)
9:00pm Arrive back at School (approximately)
